Bandana Bibs Vs Classic Dribble Bibs - What's Best For Baby?

Using a bib should be fairly straightforward:  it's a piece of fabric, tied around the neck to keep food off clothes.   But as every parent knows, nothing is simple when it comes to kids!  Bandana bibs have become fashionable in recent years as a cute alternative to the classic dribble bib.  Like so many aspects of shopping for your baby, though, there is a huge range of bibs on the market.  It can be hard to know which option will be the most practical, cost effective and stylish. There are advantages to each design as well as many different ways they can be used.

The classic dribble bib

For young babies, small, semi-circular bibs are sufficient to wipe up milky messes, while also being lightweight and easy to attach.  Smaller styles of bandana bibs can work for newborns too.  As your child grows, you'll need something that covers a greater area, and the classic pear-shaped style of a traditional dibble bib provides maximum coverage of baby's clothes during mealtimes.  Being longer than bandana bibs, they are great for young kids who wipe their hands on their clothes while eating.  They also make it easy for the carer to grab the base and wipe baby's mouth when required.  They can, however, be less effective than bandana bibs for drink spills, which tend to run straight down to baby's lap.

The best dribble bibs come in durable cottons or toweling finishes, making them absorbent and easy to wash and dry.  Sitting flat against your baby's chest, the classic dribble bib design also lends itself to fun pictures and slogans.  Bright and entertaining bibs can be a handy distraction when you need to encourage an older child to stay in their high chair and have just one more bite!

Bandana bibs

Bandana bibs are a popular alternative, which also come in a huge range of colours and fabrics. They are bulkier than classic bibs because of the folds of fabric that make up their trendy cowboy shape.   For younger babies, the extra fabric in these bibs can be handy for wiping up milk spills remove the bib and you can use it as a towel or wipe.   For older children, the hills and valleys the fabric creates are great for catching crumbs!  The best bandana bibs have Velcro or snap fasteners at the back, so they're just as quick to take on and off as classic bibs.  Kids have a habit of squirming their way out of bibs if they're not properly attached, but there are also risks associated with tying bibs too tightly.  Bandana bibs sit nice and close to baby's chin so, while they don't cover as much of baby's clothes, they're more effective in catching excess food before it falls.

As your child develops, there are even more bib options available, like scoop bibs with pelican-style catchers for dropped food, or smockettes, which convert into aprons for crafty kids or junior chefs.  You may need to try out a few different styles of bib before you know which will work best for your child and your favourite design of bib may change as your child grows and develops.

From bandana bibs to classic dribble bibs, there is something out there to suit every age and stage your child goes through.  Trendy designs and practical fabrics mean they can be stylish and functional at the same time!
